Upgrade to Wordpress 2.2 now!

Written on 5/17/2007 – 3:38 am | by keysinunez.com | 1,849 Views

WordpressWordpress has released version 2.2 of their CMS software approximately 19 hours ago. It’s labeled Getz in honor of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and has been downloaded 18,840 times as of this post.

Here are a few features that have been added/tweaked/modded:

1. WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes.
2. Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface.
3. A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond entering your login.
4. Infinite comment stream, meaning that on your Edit Comments page when you delete or spam a comment using the AJAX links under each comment it will bring in another comment in the background so you always have 20 items on the page. (I know it sounds geeky, but try it!)
5. We now protect you from activating a plugin or editing a file that will break your blog.
6. Core plugin and filter speed optimizations should make everything feel a bit more snappy and lighter on your server.
7. We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.

For the geeks out there, here are a few tech-y notes:

1. A new set of WordPress-specific XML-RPC APIs that allow for editing pages, setting categories, and much more.
2. We now use jQuery for a number of internal functions, and hope to transition all of our JS to use it. (We still need volunteers for this.)
3. Comment feeds now support multiple formats, including Atom.
4. Our internal mail functions now use phpMailer, which allows for things like SMTP support.
5. You can now set database collation and character set in your config file.
6. You can also hardcode your site and WP URL in the config file, overriding the values in the DB.
7. Finally we’ve increased the inline documentation of a number of functions inside of WP, which should help you navigate those parts of the code.

Recounting my experience in upgrading (deleted previous post):
1. it was a bitch because I had to use something else other than an FTP Client. DOS? LMAO.
2. Some plugins didn’t work, some needed upgrading as well.
3. AJAX Comments seem to be intermittently clowning (which explains the test, testing comments below)
4. Sidebar Widgets is already built in Wordpress! I spent 15 minutes trying to find out why I couldn’t activate the plugin. LOL. /me dais
5. Hurray for separate Comments tab!
6. Links have been changed to Blogroll~
7. Edit option beside the Activate thinger in the Plugins section.
8. For some reason, I think loading is slower. I’m not sure. Care to disprove this?
9. Preview thinger opens in a new window (new tab in mine since I configured Firefox that way) Booooo~ I liked it better when it was part of the write post section.

My upgrading actually went faster than ever, so fraid I'm gonna have to disagree to that. Hehe, but my only problem was the one you read in my blog, other than that, everything was pretty cool, including the plugins because I did plugin-updating last week =)

I also like the preview when it was still on the same page. So boo for that.
